Biertan Audio Quest –
A Village Where Stories Travel Through Time
This isn’t just a quick stop on your way through Transylvania — it’s an invitation to slow down and truly connect with one of Romania’s most charming UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Biertan Audio Quest is a free, immersive audio tour designed to guide you beyond the famous fortified church and into the heart of the village. With 22 stops throughout Biertan, you’ll discover secret corners, fascinating history, and the vibrant multicultural heritage of the place — Saxon, Romanian, Hungarian and Roma — all at your own pace.
Every village has its secrets — and Biertan is full of them. Through the voices of locals, historians, and artists, the Audio Quest brings to life the small but powerful stories that shaped this place: from the legend of the lock with 19 mechanisms to the “marriage prison” and the whispers of Saxon craftsmen in the citadel walls.
Simply scan the QR codes you’ll find along the route, put on your headphones, and let the stories unfold directly on your phone — no app needed! The tour blends historical research, creative storytelling and local stories, transforming your visit into a rich sensory journey.
Whether you're a culture lover, a curious traveler, or just someone looking for something different, this tour was made for you. It’s perfect for families, solo travelers, digital nomads, or weekend explorers.

How it works
To enjoy the Biertan Audio Quest, all you need is a smartphone with internet access, a pair of headphones, and a bit of curiosity!
Accessing the tour is very simple: along the route, you’ll find discreet panels with QR codes – once scanned, they automatically start the corresponding audio story for each location, right in your phone’s browser (there’s no need to install an app).
We recommend using headphones to fully enjoy the immersive sound atmosphere and to maintain the village’s tranquility and respect the comfort of other visitors.
The tour is available in Romanian and English, includes 22 stops, it begins at the Fortified Church of Biertan, and ends with the Via Transilvanica trail.
Just scan the QR for the desired language to open the tour audio page in your browser. Switching between languages is always possible.
The audio tour is designed as a relaxed and engaging experience, not a race against time. If you want to listen to all 22 stories and complete the full route, plan for about 3.5 hours – around 2 hours and 30 minutes for the audio and another hour for walking between stops.
The best part is that you don’t have to do it all in one day! The tour is designed to be enjoyed at your own pace over a peaceful weekend – an alternative to hasty, conventional tours that leave no room for reflection or authentic discovery. Take your time to pause, listen, and explore – Biertan has many stories worth hearing in your own time.
